"Sunset" - A Short Story
and an invitation for an online workshop
On a warm night, as the summer faded into autumn she stood under the setting sun and made a wish. She'd never quite believed in wishes but for some reason this time felt like the right time. As she watched the pinks and purples of the sky she thought of all the things she wished would happen. She had a plan, but it seemed to be falling apart, so – this was her final option.
“A wish! Ha! How fickle!” she thought to herself.
But still... She persisted in her wish – closing her eyes for the briefest moment, she took a deep breath, held it for a beat, then exhaled. As she exhaled, she peeked through her eyelashes in case she missed that all important “cue” that the wish took.
Afterwards, she sheepishly shook her head chuckling at herself. What she missed as she looked at the ground, bewildered by her actions, was the strange twinkling far off in the sunset. Maybe something had heard after all.
The next day was uneventful as the others before it, and the day after that... and so on. Once in awhile she would think back to the wish she made, but nothing really changed for her. Years went by, and the wish became a dying hope. Always slightly out of reach.
Then one evening, under a beautiful sunset on a warm night, is summer faded into autumn, she looked up at all the colours. It was the same sky, but it had changed. Every night it was different, changed - but the same. As she reflected on this, she realized that while some things had stayed the same, she was like the sunset – she had changed. The wish had come true – just not in the way she had expected.
